Franja Partisan hospital
The Franja Partisan hospital is one of the few preserved partisan hospitals. It represents a symbol of Slovene partisan health care and bears witness to incredible humanity and self-sacrifice of the health care and other personnel taking care of the wounded. The complex of the Franja Partisan Hospital is comprised of 14 wooden barracks and several auxiliary facilities. They were gradually built in the narrow, difficult to access Pasica gorge in Dolenji Novaki near Cerkno. The construction lasted from December 1943 to May 1945. The hospital was named after a partisan doctor, Dr. Franja Bojc Bidovec, who shortly after the hospital was established, took on the function of its administrator.
It was first opened in the year 1500 and is known to be one of the oldest still preserved entrances into mines in Europe. It is also the oldest part of the mine in Idrija. You will see presentations of old working processes in the mine, from manual ore excavation, loading ore in carts, transporting the full carts etc. All presentations include original tools, old tool copies and dummies. The total length of the pit at this level is about 300 metres. At the beginning of the pit Šelštev, the mighty building that was used as a register office was built in the 18th century.
The Cerkno region is a small link in the chain of Slovenia's prealpine foothills. Though removed from large centers and events, it nevertheless takes pride in a history lasting several thousand years. The Cerkno Museum is the only institution that is integrally studying the rich heritage of this region. With its collections, exhibitions and other activities, the Museum is enabling visitors to recognize the cultural identity of the Cerkno region. By continuously developing and broadening its activities, the museum is significantly co-creating the cultural happenings in this area.
